Aggregate shape and texture have been reported as major contributing factors to pavement performance. Research has consistently shown the advantage of using more angular and rough

textured aggregates to minimize tenderness
and rutting and maximize the load-carrying
capacity of the pavement structure.
Compacted angular particles become
interlocked and exhibit mechanical
resistance to displacement.

The effects of "Donna Fill"® as compared to
natural sands for fine aggregate in Asphalt
Mixtures demonstrated an increase in mixture
stability, thicker film thickness retained,
no plastic fines to accelerate rutting and increase optimum asphalt cement content,

and a reduction in rutting and stripping susceptibility. Limiting the natural sands to 15 percent maximum in the mixture and using "Donna Fill"® as the fine aggregate portion of the mixture will increase pavement performance and the life expectancy of the pavement. The increase in life expectancy leads to a reduction in maintenance cost and an increase in lane miles of additional rehabilitation of asphaltic roadways.
